The Igreja da Misericordia which translates as ‘Mercy Church’ features a Renaissance portal that dates from 1541. Some of the Algarve International Classical Music Festival’s performances take place here between May and July.
The 13th century Santa Maria do Castelo; “St. Mary of the Castle’ is one of Tavira’s main churches. Most of the building was destroyed during the 1755 earthquake, but its original Gothic doorway still remains. It also contains the tombs of D Paio Peres Correia and his knights.
The ruins of the 13th century castelo are worth a visit and its battlemented walls offer splendid views of the town, river delta and sea cuisine
Tavira is a tuna-fishing port, and offers a wide variety of fresh fish at extremely low prices. It may be sampled in one of the town»s upmarket restaurants, or no-frills style: among the fishermen in the harbour area.
