The area is one of Europe’s up-and-coming tourist hotspots and has a fascinating history. Lagos came to play a pivotal role in Portugal’s Age of Discovery as it was from Lagos that Vasco da Gama set sail on his epic voyage of 1499. The town was founded by the Carthagians in around 400 BC as the town’s deep harbour and wide bay made the area attractive to settlers. Lagos flourished under the Moors, and became a major trade centre between Portugal and Africa.
