In 1966 Sir Henry Cotton designed and oversaw construction of the Championship course at Penina, the first golf resort to be built in the Algarve. From that point on, British golfers began to make the journey to the Algarve in significant numbers. Over the last forty years the Algarve has become one of the premier golfing destinations in Europe and is regarded today as a premier venue by top professionals.

The 100 mile Algarve coastline is blessed with over thirty golf courses ranging from the relatively humble 9-hole, to dramatic coastal 18-hole courses that are set amongst the  rugged cliffs that mark the edge of the coastline. The Algarve golf courses have, for the most part, been designed by internationally recognised specialist architects. In combination with the superb landscapes in which they are located, the needs of the most demanding golfers are satisfied.

The favourable climate, with more than 300 days of sunshine per year, ensures the golf season is extended over many months, enticing players from all over the world to the Algarve.
