Alcantarilha really is a rustic little Moorish village were you will find time to relax and enjoy local cuisine. Narrow streets lined with whitewashed houses snake up the hill towards the bell—towered church, their terracotta tiles glow warmly in the sunshine. In the calm of the morning, elderly men congregate at the cafés to chat and contemplate and women pause on the doorsteps to pass the time of day. Traditional or more modern property is available for rent or sale and to suit all budgets and requirements in this traditional little village.
It’s not all pleasantries here however; Alcantarilha has one gory claim to fame. The Capela dos Ossos, Chapel of Bones is appropriately named, for one of its walls is inlaid with 1500 human skulls. All that remains of the original 16th century structure is the Manueline main chapel, to which an 18th century carved and gilded retable has since been added. The baptismal chapel has a tiled ashlar that dates back to the 17th century, and in the sacristy, sits a fine chest above which there is a niche decorated with acanthus leaves which is 18th century.
Despite the town’s traditional feel, one of Alcantarilha’s perks is that you’re never far from the mainstream tourist attractions. If you get bored of the peace and quiet one of the largest water parks in Portugal is a few kilometres away, and the performing dolphins at Zoomarine are an easy drive. For beaches, look no further than the swathes of golden sand at Armacao De Pera. Or make another kind of escape into the cool, scented eucalyptus forests of the Monchique Mountains to thrill at the stunning views.
With a cluster of modern villas, a self—catering holiday in Alcantarilha works well. Join the ebb and flow of local life in the shops and markets and then dine al fresco on your private, peaceful terrace alongside a delicious pool in the early evening sunshine. If a more modern villa is what you are looking for then we may have just the property you are looking for with modern or traditional villas for rent or sale to suit all budgets and requirements.
